about

Original riff was written in Meiningen, Germany, Fall 2016.

I had just traveled to Ireland, and learned about “living wakes” when a person would say goodbye to their friends and family before they headed to America. Communication was difficult and the journey so dangerous that travelers said goodbye as if they’d never see or hear from their families again. This journey is being made today by millions of refugees. My brother is fostering two Syrian boys in Germany. Spending time with his foster sons and seeing how much we have in common, despite speaking different languages and practicing different religions, I began writing this song. Upon returning home, I was horrified to see the US reaction to the refugee crisis, fear mongering and racism prevalent in Trump’s America. I finished this tune and donated the proceeds to the ACLU. I wanted to punch back with this song.

lyrics

Strung out on campaign lines
Fold a flag over my eyes
Hear the lonely tone of the whistle blow
It’s truly frightening
But Things are never what they seem
question everything you’re told

These borders cannot divide
Your heart was not built to take sides
I see a little light in you

While the bombs were dropping
They had to do something
At least for the children’s sake
They sailed away Chartered a one way
Gave their home a living wake
They found no welcome signs
Barbed wire and borderlines
Refugees now a monster make

Liberty Raise your torch for freedom
If you can’t go home my door is open
If you lose your faith I’ll keep on believing
Born and raised on American dreams
I see a little light in you

Speak the tongue of your mother
In a land without owners
This world is ours to discover
We could learn from each other
See there’s more to love than to fear

Liberty Raise your torch for freedom
If you can’t go home my door is open
If you lose your faith I’ll keep on hoping
We were born and raised on American dreams
If you can’t go home you can stay with me
